Activities to keep your kids busy this summer

If you want to give you some activities to keep your kids busy this summer, here are some ideas that can help. As summer is fast approaching and kids would be sitting idly at home, simply watching TV or playing video games. But, too much of TV and video games will make them couch potatoes. Instead of letting them see the unreal and virtual world, show them real world. Encourage them to explore the outside world, of course within limits. As parents, we can be sure that most kids would love to do things beyond TV and video games. They'd love to explore, to play games good old fashion way, ride bikes, do some creative things, crafts, learning new things, etc. You need to find out what your kids like and encourage them accordingly. Make their summer vacation interesting. This sounds more like a summer camp, but we're not referring to those expensive summer camps. Instead, you can make your own summer camp.

There is another reason why you need to encourage your kids to take up summer activities. In the coming academic year, one of the first things that their teachers ask is writing an essay about their experience during summer vacation.

· Encourage them to read: Most kids love to read. Make sure that you supply them with suitable literature for their age. Reading can be one of the best things that can happen to your child.

· Encourage them to write: Ask your kids to write an essay about their recent holiday experiences or about something that they like.

Here are some of the activities I have found locally in the Okanogan valley keep your kids busy this summer.

Walking trails and short hikes are easy and many are wheel-chair accessible.

Similkameen Trail

The Washington & Great Northern rail bed follows the Similkameen River west from Oroville Washington. A second trailhead one mile west of Oroville offers an easy hike to the tall girder bridge spanning the river. Another 2 miles takes you to the Similkameen Falls overlook and the end of the 3.5 mile trail.

Plans call for the trail to continue 12.5 miles to the ghost town of Nighthawk. The non-motorized Similkameen Trail is a nice easy grade suitable for all ages. Benches and historic descriptions are available along the trail.

Be sure to visit the Old Depot Museum and Visitors Center near the Oroville trailhead.

McLaughlin Canyon Trail

The McLaughlin Canyon Trail is a part of the Brigade Trail used by the Hudson's Bay Company in the early 1800's and became known as the Caribou Trail during the Gold Rush in the 1850's. These trails diverged from the Okanogan River as the shoreline was impassable and climbed into the confined canyon.

On July 29, 1858, Native Americans from the Chelan, Okanogan, and Columbia tribes encountered a conflict with about 160 prospectors in McLaughlin Canyon. Both sides experienced injuries and casualties.

The easy 3 mile round trip descends the canyon and overlooks the Okanogan River. Although the canyon was devastated by fire in 2007, it is interesting and beautiful to see life returning to the canyon. The trail was cleared in 2011, wind falls will be a problem for several years.

Driving Directions: About 4 miles south of Tonasket WA, take McLaughlin Canyon Rd for 3 miles to trailhead on left, trail is on the right - south of road.

Sa Teekh Wa Trail

The Sa Teekh Wa Trail is accessed from downtown Winthrop, Washington and is a nice walk through a pine forest along a scenic river.

This 1 mile level round trip runs along the Chewuch River and features historic and environmental interpretive signs.

Driving Directions: The trail is located at 110 Bluff Street in Winthrop. Just follow the main street to the northwest end of town. A bridge next to the Sa Teekh Wa Hotel provides access to the trail across the river.

Hiking and Walking Trails

1-handicap accessible; 2-little difficulty; 3-moderate; 4-good exercise; 5-good hiking shoes and water a must!

Candy Point Trail (5) The main trail is largely constructed of hand laid stone including steps expertly placed in steeper sections. Park at the Coulee Dam Federal Credit Union and walk 300 feet down to the park ahead.

Community Trail (1) All four towns are connected by well maintained trails.

Down River Trail (1) A new biking and hiking trail that follows the Columbia River north. Perfect for persons of all ages, 6.5 miles on Rufus Woods Lake.

North Dam Park (1) North Dam Park is located between Electric City and Grand Coulee and holds Banks lake. Walk across the man made dam and down below by the softball fields and then back up through the park.

Northrup Canyon Trail (5) Begins in a sheltered canyon and extends through the only forest in Grant County. At the top of the gorge is a picturesque lake which is stocked with trout.

Learn more about this fun trail.

Steamboat Rock Trail (5) Steep in spots, good hike. Wildflowers are abundant in the spring. This hike has a great view of Banks lake and the coulees! Start at Steamboat Rock State Park.

Bunchgrass Prairie Nature Trail (2) The National Park Service offers an excellent nature trail complete with an interpretive booklet to help identify plants as part of the program at Spring Canyon Campground. Brochures are at trail head, see park ranger for additional details or interpretive walks.

Historical Walking Tour - The town of Coulee Dam boasts a history rich in stories of the building of the mighty Grand Coulee Dam. From the well planned Engineer's Town to an entire section of Mason City that was moved to make way for construction, Coulee Dam holds a vast treasure of information just waiting to be explored. Start at the Visitor Arrival Center and follow the signs through this short excursion into the past. This trip through time is presented by the town of Coulee Dam.

Crown Point Vista - Overlooking the Grand Coulee Dam and surrounding communities.....Bring your camera!

Geology on the Road - The great floods carved out a "coulee" revealing a stunning display of layers of basalt rock. Driving south on Hwy. 155 you'll see Steamboat Rock and the Devil's Punch Bowl across from it. 33 miles south of Grand Coulee is Dry Falls, part of Sun Lakes State Park, featuring an interpretive center and awe-inspiring viewing point. Dry Falls is "Washington's Grand Canyon."
